In the present art world, influenced by neoliberal trends, this one-day intensive workshop critically examines vital concepts underpinning artist-driven productions. It emphasizes the delicate balance of horizontal collaboration within a system that often retains hierarchical structures.
Amid the backdrop of market-driven pressures and the insecurities inherent in the artistic process, intertwined with the complexities of management, participants will delve into the nuanced dynamics of self-producing. This journey delves into the challenges and opportunities for artists striving to uphold their artistic integrity while navigating the multifaceted roles of artist, producer, and agent. In essence, this workshop sees artists not only as creators of their art but also as architects of the very environment in which their art develops, drawing thought-provoking parallels between the creation of a show and the construction of an open system within the performance art ecosystem.
Throughout the workshop, we will employ various exercises involving simulation and comparison to dissect the intricate web of factors that impact artists today, including considerations like wages, social security, support networks and the formulation of ethically conscious budgets. By critically engaging with these practical elements, participants will be encouraged to debate the intricate relationship between artistic expression and the broader socio-economic realities that mold the contemporary performance art landscape.
